Designs on Metal

Kevin Baldwin has worked as a blacksmith since embarking on his apprenticeship in this ancient craft at Designs on Metal in 2000; an old craft for the new millennium! He qualified with a Certificate of Merit from The Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths after completing the NETS course at Hereford College in 2003.

Kevin has remained at Designs on Metal, based in the village of Stowlangtoft just to the east of Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk, and now works in many metals including mild steel, wrought iron, stainless steel, brass, bronze and copper.

As a 21st century blacksmith, his wide range of skills and methods include traditional hot forging, electric welding, plasma cutting and cold forming of metals, frequently combining modern metals with old techniques, and vice versa. Kevin enjoys working alongside his customers in developing their ideas, using his experience to ensure the customer gets what they desire.

The inspiration for Kevin’s work comes from many sources including nature, art, engineering, architecture, and the use of various designs and metals used in old steam engines of which he has a deep fascination. In short, Kevin is addicted to metal!

Designs on Metal have kindly opened their forge for the Meet The Artist experience.
